Research Ethics

The Graduate Program in Health Sciences offers the discipline “Bioethics and Ethics in Research” (MED 810), with 60 hours of class time. The agenda for this course includes: Fundamentals of ethics and bioethics. Main currents of bioethics. Ethical (bio) problems correlated to working in health through the individual and collective scope. Clinical bioethics. Bioethics and the field of public health. Ethics in research with humans and animals.

Any project that directly or indirectly involves human beings should be approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Viçosa (REC/UFV), before the beginning of procedures outlined in the methodology. Similarly, any project involving animals needs the approval of the Ethics Committee on Animal Use of the Federal University of Viçosa (CEUA-UFV).

REC/UFV

The REC/UFV is linked to the Pro-Rectory of Research and Graduate Studies of the Federal University of Viçosa, which will assure the means for its adequate functioning.

Members of the REC/UFV are independent decision makers about the execution of their functions. They are tasked with maintaining confidentiality regarding any information received and the deliberations issued.

REC/UFV is responsible for identifying and analyzing ethical issues in scientific research involving human beings, individually or collectively, through an ethical evaluation in accordance with Resolution CNS 466/2012 and other complementary standards of the National Health Council and the National Commission of Ethics in Research (CONEP).

CEUA / UFV

The Committee on Ethics in the Use of Animals of the Federal University of Viçosa (CEUA-UFV) is regimented in accordance with Normative Resolution No. 01, of July 9, 2010, included in the National Council of the Control of Animal Experimentation (CONCEA) part of the structure of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).

This regulation mandates the establishment and functioning of the Ethics Committees on the Use of Animals (CEUA), in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 11,794, of October 8, 2008. Art. 20. CEUA-UFV is linked to the Pro- Rectory of Research and Graduate Studies of the Federal University of Viçosa, which assures the means for its full and adequate functioning.

CEUA-UFV is an interdisciplinary, autonomous collegiate of consultative, deliberative and educational character with the purpose of guaranteeing the ethical use of animals in teaching, scientific research and extension activities.
